Sara Lowes
Sara Lowes was a new name to me until I realised she has been on many recordings I love as a session musician. She's lent her talents to King Creosote, Micah P. Hinson, Jim Noir, David Potts and The Earlies' studio and live band.
The debut EP from Manchester based Lowes is a bubbling mix of folk infused pop and rock. Sometimes downbeat, often looking up to the sky with a smile, her songwriting is varied and incredibly mature. These six songs cover virtually all the bases, from the mesmerising fun of Down and Round with production values that blast it into outer space, to the melancholic charm of Evening Prayer, just her voice and piano.
The bold opener I Wish has a full band behind her throwing out a beat that hooks you from the first bar. Don't get fooled into thinking it's style over substance however, Uniform Days has her warm and mellow voice with piano and ethereal strings and backing vocals embracing you. Proof enough that she is not just another singer-songwriter.
Keep your eye on Sara Lowes, I reckon we'll see a lot more of her.
Put out on Red Deer Records, who started out as a folk night in Manchester and have taken the bold step of producing some albums. This is a fantastic start for them. It's available from http://www.myspace.com/saralowes
