Point Break was a great film, it was one of Kathryn Bigelow’s early films along with Blue Steel and Strange Days. These films stuck to the framework desired by a big studio for a successful mainstream movie, whilst simultaneously subverting almost every aspect of it. Now it has fallen victim to the all consuming meat grinder of the Hollywood remake/reboot machine. Warner Bros and Alcon Entertainment have revealed the first look at the new Point Break, directed by Ericson Core. Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez are the new Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

Wrong, wrong, wrong! the original was a big cheesey dumb action movie that rewrote the rulebook on how good a big cheesey dumb action movie could be. It became a cult classic and is still referenced today (Hot Fuzz for one example). It does not need to be remade.

The new one might be a good film, but it will forever be compared to something that is a cultural touchstone, Mark Kermode gets to the meat of what made the original so good:

The new film adds more extreme sports to the mix, according to the synopsis it is ‘replete with the most daring athleticism ever seen in a motion picture’, but it doesn’t have Reeves and Swayze does it?
