Their third album Take Yourself A Wife was released in September 2008 to critical acclaim. The album consists of songs written from the 18th to 20th Centuries centred around Teeside, Newcastle and the North East. Megson have added their own superb arrangements and harmonies to create a mature, poignant yet infectiously joyful album.
It all began for Megson in 2004 when Stu and Debs, then living in South East London, armed themselves with a selection of original and traditional folk songs, combined their classical and punk backgrounds and started gigging on the London acoustic scene. Since then, Megson have gone from strength to strength, playing up and down the country at festivals, folk clubs, arts centres and acoustic venues.
Megson’s 2007 album SMOKE OF HOME received critical acclaim across the board with a host of strong reviews including fRoots “This is first rate! ...if you don’t like this music you have a problem.”, Mojo” Fresh, melodic and bushy-tailed” and Rock’n’Reel “…this hits all the targets ****”. It also gained radio play from DJ’s such as BBC Radio 2’s Mike Harding and Bob Harris, the latter inviting them to perform an exclusive live session at the BBC and commenting ‘how gorgeous was that...absolutely beautiful’.
The biggest strength of Megson, however, is their stunning live performances. The duo have played at numerous folk festivals including Shrewsbury, Sidmouth, Gosport and Fareham, Wimborne and Cambridge, which led to a review in County Music People describing them as ‘enthralling’. They toured with Seth Lakeman on his ‘post Mercury nomination” tour and also with award wining roots duo Show Of Hand both in the UK and also throughout Germany. Added to this, Autumn 2007 saw a PRS Foundation ATOM award given to the duo to reward technical innovations in contemporary music.
