'Really what I do is try and write songs that might make a difference'
Being voted Best Male Artist in the 2004 BBC Welsh Music Awards was a well deserved plaudit for this talented and compassionate artist. With a career spanning twenty years he has consistently dished up material that is both challenging and wonderfully melodic.
To Joseph the song is everything 'it's the song that can soothe, explain,
and even in a small way save us'. Tom Robinson has described him as one
of Britain's 'most charismatic and electrifying performers'. His knack is
in distilling the human condition to a few lines of song. Whether he rails
against injustice or soars on the wings of true love, his lyrics seem to
burrow that bit deeper than so many of his contemporaries.
Our modern day lunatic asylum of fundamentalism, war and hypocrisy are perfect targets for his songwriting. His like reassures us that we are not just victims, that we have rights and can stand up against the fools who so often pull the strings.
He has been awarded an Amnesty International accolade for his work with the Brazilian Landless Workers’ Association Movement, he also works with charities like War Child and Action Africa. He is a mesmerising performer that commands attention whilst delivering a message.
