Winners of 'Best Group' at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, of 'Instrumental
Album Of The Year' at the LiveIreland awards and piles of other gongs
Flook are probably the best Irish/English folk group around.
Renowned for the incredible range of sound textures Finnegan and Allen produce from flute and whistle, backed by the rythms of guitar and bodhran by Boyd and Kelly. All of them have a formidable list of other acts and projects they have been involved with.
Formed in 1996 their first recording was a live album, called Live! It featured their unusual lineup of three flute and whistle players, John Joe Kelly hadn't joined the band at this time, the muliti-instrumentalist Michael McGoldrick was to leave the group after that initial recording. Kelly's superb bodhran playing added a whole new dimension to their sound, it's in this lineup that we see them today.
With the joy and exuberance of their live performanc it was little surprise
that their next album was again a live recording The Four Of Us in
1999. The following year saw their first studio album Flatfish,
hailed as a landmark contemporary celtic album by the critics. The follow
up Rubai garnered more
praise and awards across the board.
They show no signs of easing up on their quality with the release of their latest Haven, released to coincide with their tenth anniversary tour. The innovative spontaneity that they exhibit on stage is perfectly captured on this CD. Little surprise then that were voted Best Group at the Radio 2 Folk Awards.
